I love my kids. And I really like Andy Mineo. Mix those two together, and get yourself an amazing night.
I had been sitting on a gift certificate for Wooly’s, one of my favorite music venues here in Des Moines, for almost a year. But a few months ago something caught my eye. I had to do a double take because we don’t normally have Christian hip-hop artists tour here in Des Moines (but we should change that).
As a parent, we have been working with my kids to teach them that we have to work for things in life so all three of my boys (twins who are 13 years-old and a 10 year-old) raised $20 each to pay for their ticket. I purchased 4 tickets to the show over the summer and then the countdown began.
When Thursday night rolled around, I was pleasantly surprised to find a line of ticket holders stretching down and around the block. Because my 13 year-old twins now look me in the eye, I didn’t worry so much about them being able to see. However, my 10 year-old is a little on the short side so once we entered the sold out venue, he quickly snuck his way all the way up to the bank of speakers on the right side of the stage.
The good news is that his body absorbed most bass, but I wasn’t so lucky. It was a super loud show, especially standing a few feet from the tweeters, but I took one for the team.
SPZRKT and Propaganda were awesome openers and made appearances all throughout Andy’s set. When Andy hit the stage, unfortunately we weren’t able to see him because he stood on top of two 10′ video displays. I didn’t realize how amazing the correlating digital displays were until I got home and watched some YouTube videos of his Uncomfortable tour footage like the one below.
Andy Mineo simply solidified himself as one of my favorite Christian hip-hop artists…so much that I wish that we would have invited my wife to come too. Hands-down I would go see him again in a heartbeat.
Oh, in case you’re wondering, one of my boys naturally purchased Mineo’s new t-shirt featured up above.
While you can’t purchase Mineo’s new apparel at his store yet, keep an eye out in the near future as I imagine they will be available for sale before long.
