About Lighten Up Gear

Who's the face behind the shirts?

Who We Are

I’m Erik Carlson, founder of Lighten Up Gear and lover of most t-shirts. Located in the Des Moines, Iowa area, my full-time career is in digital marketing, but I moonlight as a t-shirt designer and small business owner. But honestly my wife of 18+ years and my 3 sons are my biggest joys in life (besides my obvious faith in Jesus). When I’m not hanging out with them or working, I co-lead the music ministry at my church, lead a small group and coach soccer.

In addition to Lighten Up Gear, I launched another t-shirt company in 2014 called Bald Tees. Bald Tees is just what you would expect…a t-shirt company that sells funny t-shirts about being bald.

Lastly, I’m getting ready to launch Seventhseed.com – my digital marketing agency focused on providing digital marketing services to small businesses. Our focus is primarily on web design and social media marketing.

What We Do

We make funny and serious Christian t-shirts. Simple as that. They are meant to make you laugh. Make you pause and think. Challenge you. Convict you. Maybe offend you. Start conversations with random people. And keep you clothed because you’d look silly shirtless.

What Makes Us Different

Our shirts are designed to be conversation starters–kind of like coffee table books. No one really reads coffee table books cover to cover, but they prompt conversations when you have guests over. Our shirts are designed to do just that. Start a conversation. Give you an opportunity to connect with someone.

We appreciate you supporting Lighten Up Gear and we want to support others. So we earmark 10% of our profits to go to charitable organizations. So not only do you get a sweet t-shirt when you buy from Lighten Up Gear, but you also help the world. You could provide food and an education for a child in Uganda. You could help a refugee family get their feet under them here in the United States. You could help stop the trafficking of children.
